NZISA Annual Cricket Tournament
We competed in the New Zealand Indian Sports Association (NZISA) Annual Cricket Tournament held in Auckland from December 28th to 29th, 2024. The tournament featured eight teams, including seven Indian sports clubs from across New Zealand and an invitation team from Auckland (Tamil Nadu Premier League).
Ranked seventh out of eight, we faced a challenging group stage against strong opponents like Pukekohe, Waikato, and Tamil Nadu. The tournament featured accomplished players such as Sandeep Patel, Ronnie Hira, and Bharat Popli.
Despite logistical hurdles, the team managed to bring together players from Canterbury and Otago with limited preparation time, including a final training session on Christmas Day.
Our tournament journey began with a loss against Pukekohe but showed marked improvement in our second game against Tamil Nadu. In a thrilling finish, captain Venkat’s heroics with the bat secured a dramatic victory off the final ball, fostering camaraderie and boosting team morale. The momentum carried into the next day, where we played Waikato and Wellington. Despite a strong start against Waikato, a mid-innings collapse led to a narrow defeat. The final match against Wellington, shortened to 10 overs, saw standout performances from Mandeep with the bat and Gurdit with the ball, securing a decisive win to claim fifth place overall.
The weekend proved to be a valuable learning experience for the team, filled with close games, memorable performances, and growing team cohesion. Support from CISC fans in Auckland added to the positive atmosphere, and the team is already looking forward to next year’s tournament with renewed enthusiasm.
🎊 Congratulations to Karan Sekhon who was named as the MVP for CISC.
We also had two players selected for the tournament team.Congratulations to Mandeep Singh and Gurdit Singh. 🙌🏽
